Quick answer: Claude Motion is a beta feature, announced on 8 October 2026, that turns a text prompt into a short animated explainer built from your own text, charts, shapes and images. Claude writes the code that drives the animation, so you can adjust it in an editor, revise it by chatting with Claude, and download it as an MP4. It is not a tool for editing your own camera footage. At launch it was offered on Claude Team and Enterprise plans.
If you have seen headlines saying that Claude can now make or edit video, Claude Motion is almost certainly the feature they mean. This guide explains what it does, what it does not do, and how a business could use it.

What Claude Motion is
According to Runway, one of the launch partners, this feature turns a prompt into a short animated explainer. You give it your own material, such as text, charts, shapes and images, and Claude builds an animation from it. Press coverage describes it as a beta launched alongside a second new feature, Claude Dashboards.
The key point is the word animation. The tool builds a moving graphic from your content. It is closer to a motion-design assistant than to a video editor that cuts and trims clips you filmed.
How Claude Motion works
Runway’s announcement says Claude writes the code that drives the animation. That design is why the result stays editable. Based on the same announcement, you can:
- Adjust the animation in the editor, for example the text and the timing of the scenes.
- Revise it through conversation, by telling Claude what to change.
- Download it as an MP4, a video file you can upload to your website or social channels.
Because the animation is built from code and from your own material, the coverage we read describes it as a different approach from AI tools that generate realistic video footage.
Who can use it
On launch day, Runway reported that it was available on Claude Team and Enterprise plans. Other write-ups have described availability differently, and beta features change quickly, so check your own plan inside Claude before you plan around it. We could not find a published maximum length, video resolution or frame rate, so test a short clip before you promise a client a specific format.
Finishing the video in an editor
A short animation is often only the start of a video. Two partners explain how the output can move into a full editor:
- Runway: you can export an animation to Runway, add generated footage, edit the full piece, and finish it with your other video work. Runway also suggests reformatting a 16:9 explainer into vertical or square versions, or localising the voiceover.
- Adobe: SMB Tech reports a “Send to Adobe” option that opens an animation in Adobe Firefly Video Editor. There you can use a layered timeline, trim and reorder clips, and add your own footage. A free Adobe account unlocks more tools, according to the same report.
This is also where editing your own footage happens: after you export, in a video editor, not inside the feature itself.
What Claude Motion is good for
Runway lists a few example uses. The ones that fit a small business best are:
- Launch or update videos that animate product numbers or results.
- Onboarding walkthroughs that explain steps for new customers or new staff.
- Internal explainers that turn a report or chart into something people actually watch.
- Vertical versions of an explainer for Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
If you already publish reports, dashboards or product data, it offers a quick way to turn them into a first draft of a video. Our own Digital Factory work shows how much useful data a business can have; the hard part is explaining it simply.
What Claude Motion cannot do (yet)
- It does not edit your own phone or camera footage. It builds animations. Use a video editor for footage.
- It is a beta. Runtime Wire notes that no accuracy or adoption results were published at launch, so treat the announcement as a description of the design, not proof of performance.
- Some details are unpublished. We found no stated maximum length, resolution or frame rate.
- It is only as accurate as your input. If the numbers you give it are wrong, the animation will show them clearly.
5 tips and mistakes to avoid
- Avoid the mistake of crowding it: start with one message. A short explainer that makes one point beats a crowded one.
- Prepare your numbers. Collect the figures and images you want shown, and check them first.
- Review every word and number in the animation before you post. A person should approve it.
- Plan the finish. Decide whether you need a voiceover, music or a vertical cut, and choose the editor for that.
- Check the terms of your Claude plan and of the editing tools you use for business use.
